Sport utility vehicles are, without a doubt, the most adaptable cars on the market, thanks to their efficiency, passenger space, and truck-like features. Imagine driving your family in and around the city in a comfortable, roomy vehicle that won’t break the bank. Whether you’re taking them to the grocery store, school, or on a getaway to one of Georgia’s amazing state parks like Sweetwater Creek, an SUV is a perfect contender. Finding a dependable, reasonably priced, and well-known model to satisfy all of your family’s transportation needs in a fiercely competitive and expanding market is where things can get difficult. That’s where finding that perfect Honda dealership in Atlanta, GA, can be extremely helpful.

Honda is well-known for its line of affordable, family-friendly, driver-focused vehicles that can deliver impressive performance. Here at Gwinnett Place Honda, we can find you an SUV that not only meets all of your needs but will provide you and your family with the power, safety, and reliability you expect from a great SUV. One model that particularly stands out among the rest is the Honda CR-V.

A Look at the Honda CR-V’s Evolution Over the Years

The Honda CR-V is a compact SUV that was launched in the mid-90 and built on the renowned Honda Civic’s platform. The modern CR-V is a comfortable ride with plenty of room for a small family or someone who frequently finds themselves filling their trunk. The maximum cargo capacity of the 2022 CR-V is 75.8 cu.ft. which is plenty of space for camping gear, a trip to the hardware store, or other adventures. The CR-V is also quite capable and can tow up to 1,500 lbs when properly equipped.

The first-generation 5-door, 5-passenger CR-V joined Honda’s North American lineup for the 1997 model year and has been favored in the market ever since. It was originally powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that was paired with an automatic transmission. For 1998, the same engine could also be paired with a manual transmission depending on your needs. With the automatic transmission, the 1998 CR-V got an EPA-estimated 19 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway, and with a choice of either front-wheel drive or with the Honda Real Time all-wheel drive, you could expect exceptional performance year-round.[a]

The second-generation Honda CR-V that existed from 2002 to 2006 received an upgraded engine for better acceleration and power: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, which maintained its fuel efficiency even though horsepower increased to 160 hp and torque to 162 lb-ft. Its interior cargo space also increased to 72 cu.ft. By the third generation, which was in production from 2007 to 2011, horsepower and torque increased once again, to 166 hp and 161 lb-ft. of torque capable of towing up to 1,500 lbs. This generation was also the first time the CR-V received the rear liftgate versus its previous side-opening door.

The fourth generation of the Honda CR-V was produced from 2012 to 2015. During this generation, the manual transmission was dropped, and the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine was tuned to deliver even more pep and, more importantly, better fuel efficiency. The 2015 CR-V had an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of up to 27 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway.[a]

Honda continued to update the CR-V and, in 2016, released the first fifth-generation model. The fifth generation lasted through 2022, but we received several major updates during this time period. More notably, for the 2020 model year, Honda introduced an even more efficient CR-V in the hybrid variant. This model carried over the CR-V’s classic sporty appearance and spacious and accommodating interior while providing drivers with an EPA-estimated 40 MPG in the city and 35 MPG on the highway.[a]

Now onto its sixth generation with its 2023 model, Honda shows no signs of slowing down with this popular SUV. The Honda CR-V has demonstrated its dedication to driver satisfaction time and again with ongoing improvements and upgrades in performance, design, and even safety.

The CR-V’s Exceptional Safety Ratings Speak for Themselves

When examining safety features, the Honda CR-V is admirably quite reliable, and its accolades demonstrate that. Whether you’re looking to buy a new or used CR-V, you can expect to end up behind the wheel of one of the more reliable vehicles on the market. RepairPal gives the CR-V a score of 4.5 out of 5 for its lower-than-average annual repair costs, less than average repair frequency, and severity.[b]

For over 20 years now, the Honda CR-V has received top safety ratings and a number of awards from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For the 2022 models, the CR-V received a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA, while the IIHS made it a Top Safety Pick.[c][d]

With new standard safety features included with the redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V, we can only expect it to continue and even exceed its top safety rankings. Besides coming with a more rigid structure and improved airbags, the 2023 Honda CR-V is equipped with more standard assistance technologies with Honda Sensing. Every Honda vehicle with the Honda Sensing suite of driving and safety assistance features includes:

Collision mitigation braking, which will visually and audibly alert you and automatically brake for you when the system suspects a possible front-end collision.
Lane keeping assist system with lane departure warning and road departure mitigation to notify you when your vehicle drifts out of the lane and even helps steer your vehicle back into the lane and brake if necessary to prevent a collision.
Adaptive cruise control, which will not only help keep your vehicle moving at a designated speed but also adjust the speed when needed to keep you moving with the flow of traffic at a set distance from the vehicle in front of you.

Additionally, the new 2023 Honda CR-V includes standard blind spot monitoring on each of its models. Drivers will also get a snow driving mode for better traction on slippery road conditions and hill descent control to prevent the CR-V from rolling back when switching from the brake pedal to the accelerator while on an incline.

An Array of Accolades

Whether you’re looking to invest in a new or used model, a Honda CR-V is more than just affordable. It’s a vehicle that’s rich in value and worth every penny, with a history of recognition to show for it.

Along with years of achieving the NHTSA’s best safety ratings and several Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ honors from the IIHS, the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid was selected as one of Autotrader’s 12 Best New Cars for 2020 because of its amazing balance of power and fuel efficiency.[e] The 2021 model was awarded Best Compact SUV for the Money by U.S. News & World Report, and in 2022, the CR-V was honored as the #1 Compact SUV by U.S. News & World Report and took the #2 spot in the Crossover SUVs and SUVs with 2 Rows categories.[f][g][h]

No matter which model year you choose for your CR-V, you’ll get an SUV that offers a comfortable and safe ride, great gas mileage, and the right towing capability. Each CR-V provides a roomy interior for you, your passengers, and whatever else you want to bring along for the ride, and a wealth of amenities to make even the longest commutes enjoyable for everyone on board.
